Basic choices and constraints on long-term energy supplies

The depletion of world's fossil energy supplies due a spurt in population growth and energy demand is discussed. The longetivity of the fossil energy supply and the net rate of solar energy availability are both reduced by the energy consumed through their conversion to a suitable energy form. Solar-derived consumer energy, whether as electricity, biomass, or wind, represents a clean, alternative energy form. Since the availability of fossil fuels will decline within several decades, it is important that public and policymakers recognize the ensuing shortages and the urgent need for policies that will address them.
