A new approach towards the development of non-noble metal electrocatalysts for high temperature PEM fuel cells is reported herein. RFur-(MF)-Fe, electrocatalysts prepared by pyrolysis of organic resins (resoscinol-furaldehyde), were prepared. A thorough physicochemical characterization took place showing that the amount of solids and the drying method influence the electrochemical activity. The presence of Fe and most importantly the presence of high amount of nitrogen species in the catalyst is crucial for the electrochemical activity. RFur-(MF)-Fe are interesting candidates for use in high temperature fuel cells.
