Sphingosine-1 phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive sphingolipid that is critical in the development of blood vessels, and in the adult regulates vascular functions including vascular tone, endothelial integrity, and angiogenesis. Further, S1P may regulate arterial lesions in disease and after injury by controlling leukocyte recruitment and smooth muscle cell functions. (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2009; 29: 1439-1443.)
