Toward a program-based ADR research agenda

Program evaluation research is often Too narrowly focused to build theory about dispute resolution while theory-driven ADR research is frequently too far removed from programmatic realities to inform practice. To develop an ADR evaluation research agenda that connects theory and practice, we need to consider: making ADR context a central focus of research; undertaking a fuller account of the processes and the work of third parties in relation to what skills and orientations patties bring with them to ADR as negotiators; widening our view of ADR impact or result; and reexamining what research methods are best for studying ADR programs. By shifting our perspectives, placing negotiating parties closer to the center of our study of ADR, and grounding research in the contexts that matter to policymakers and practitioners, we could significantly advance research on third-party intervention.
