Knowledge of the cytokine response to infections diseases is important in understanding the immunological basis of host resistance as well as pathogenesis, and is useful in the analysis of mechanisms underlying the differentiation of polarized T-cell-dependent immune function. These issues were addressed at a recent workshop*.
