A review is given in this paper of a simple and effective method for deriving stress intensity factor (SIF) expressions of some finite two- and three-dimensional crack problems. Two versions of the method are provided, the first one needs the elastic crack stress solution on the crack-line (plane) in an infinite plate (or body) as a prerequisite; however, the second one waives this condition. Basic ideas and assumptions of the method are illustrated with examples. Simple and useful SIF expressions are presented; these expressions, with an accuracy generally better than 10%, are either much simpler than those which already exist or a necessary supplement to the stress intensity factors handbooks. Further application prospects and unsettled questions of the method are pointed out, while misleading claims and erroneous results by other authors are clarified.
