Effects of gadolinia and alumina addition on the densification and toughening of silicon carbide

摘要
SiC with mixtures of Al2O3 and Gd2O3 additions were effective in densifying SiC. The density of 98% of theoretical density was achieved with the Gd2O3 and Al2O3 eutectic composition. It is suggested that the improvement in density is due to liquid phase formed between Al2O3 and Gd2O3. The sintered bodies have an improved fracture toughness due to the crack deflection mechanism.
