Prostate cancer is a common malignancy that has a growing list of genetic and environmental risk factors. Carcinogenesis of the prostate is dependant on hormone influences, DNA damage, inflammation, and genetic predisposition. Finasteride has been shown to prevent prostate cancer in a large, randomized trial. The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial is currently studying selenium and vitamin E, and results should be available in several years. Many other opportunities exist for clinical study of agents with theoretical benefit for cancer prevention. Eventually, prevention strategies may be tailored to an individual's specific risk factors.
