Focusing and coupling properties of collective micro-optics on fiber ribbons

A collective micro-optics is developed for coupling laser diode arrays to single-mode-fiber ribbons. The arrangement consists of graded-index multimode fiber ribbons and coreless silica fiber ribbons of calibrated lengths that are spliced and cleaved collectively. Coupling losses of 1.07+/-0.11 dB with a working distance of 30.4+/-1.2 mu m are achieved. A theoretical model that predicts the coupling efficiency as a function of the lengths of the sections is also established. (C) 2000 Society or Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
