Binary system Sm-Co: Revision of the phase diagram in the Co rich field

摘要
The phase diagram of the binary system Co-Sm was studied in the composition range 0-26 at/% Sm by differential thermal analysis, and the observed solid phases Sm2Co17, SmCo5, Sm5Co19, Sm2Co7 and SmCo3 were characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. The congruent melting point of Sm2Co17 is confirmed, and up to 1325 degrees C the observed structural form is only the rhombohedral one. SmCo5 is formed by peritectic reaction, it is not stoichiometric and the range of solid solution is determined. The metastable uncongruent melting point of Sm2Co7 and the stable peritectic decomposition of Sm5Co19, were determined by DTA. Microprobe analysis shows that the observed phases are slightly richer in samarium than indicated by their formulas.
