In a reply to Simon Tormey's recent, Deleuzean critique of the concept and politics of representation, this article offers an alternative, deconstructive take on representation inspired by the work of Jacques Derrida. Unlike Tormey, I argue that it is neither possible nor necessary to move 'beyond representation'. Rather, representation is constitutive. This has important implications for how one conceives of the constitution of social identities, political space and counter hegemony, and for how one conceives of the role of intellectual and political leadership.
