Basics of machining methods to yield wear- and fretting-resistive surfaces, having regular roughness patterns

摘要
The paper discusses the advantages of parts' surfaces characterized by a regular roughness pattern obtained by using a method of vibrorolling. These surfaces are superior to those machined with conventional techniques, especially with regard to improvement in related parts' performance. The results of the investigation disclosed a change in the performance specifications of parts as a function of micro-groove profile variations, both with and without lubrication. Diagrams are included showing surface roughness parameters vs. machining conditions. They can be used to optimize machining parameters in order to achieve a preselected roughness pattern, thus providing the needed parts' performance specification. Vibrorolling is a simple and cost-efficient machining method recommendable as a substitute for a variety of conventional, environmentally harmful techniques. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
