摘要
New tools to design Ti alloys with controllable coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) are presented based on a careful selection of alloying elements and proper thermomechanical treatments. Control of the CTE was achievable in those alloys with high elastic softening and large elastic anisotropy, since they tend to form a unique internal structure by cold deformation. This unique structure is proposed to contribute to the negative thermal expansion, and hence it is a key factor in producing zero thermal expansion alloys. The unique zero thermal expansion behavior of the alloys is fully reversible over a wide temperature range below the austenite start temperature. (C) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc.
