Magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Gd and W/Gd

摘要
Evidence for finite-size effects, decreased spontaneous magnetization M-s and an unusual temperature dependence of M-s has been found in an investigation of the magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Gd. A nanocomposite sample comprised of W crystallites separated by a similar to 1 nm thick layer of Gd mas prepared to determine the influence of atomic disorder associated with grain boundaries. The magnetic properties of this network of ''boundary'' Gd suggest the presence of orientationally disordered or antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic moments in the grain boundaries of Gd.
