An examination, quantification and characterization of the quantity and quality of Web links used in computing literature is presented. A definitive information related to the availability of URL references as a function of their age, domain, the depth of the path used, and the technical reasons leading to failed links is provided. The technologies related to Web references and retrieval, outlining the methodology are described, and the implications of the results obtained are also described. 4,375 Web links appearing in print articles during the period from 1995-1999 were downloaded, extracted and verified by tapping into online libraries of the ACM and the IEEE Computer Society.
