Neutron-induced radionuclides in soil samples from the JCO campus were measured by non-destructive gamma-ray spectrometry. Na-24, Fe-59, Co-60,, and La-140 etc., all of which were produced by (n, gamma) reaction, were detected in the soil collected within 30-50 m of the precipitation tank. Meanwhile. the fast neutron product, Mn-54, produced by (n,p) reaction, was detected only in 5 samples collected at points close to the precipitation tank. Sc-46, produced both by thermal and fast neutrons from Sc-45 and Ti-46, was detected in most of the samples from the area within 70 m. A volatile fission product, I-131, was also detected in most samples. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
