Ultra-low-frequency magnetic fields during the Guam earthquake of 8 August 1993 and their interpretation

Ultra-low-frequency (ULF) emissions have been observed as a precursor to the Guam earthquake on August 8, 1993 (M-s = 8.0) using data from a proton fluxgate magnetometer. The details of this analysis have been published in Hayakawa et al. [Hayakawa, M., Kawate, R., Molchanov, O.A., Yumoto, K., 1995. Results of ultra-low-freyuency magnetic field measurements during the Guam earthquake of 8 August 1993. Geophys. Res. Lett., in press]. This paper briefly reviews the essential features of the ULF signatures of the Guam earthquake. Theoretical estimations are presented in this paper to understand the frequency dependence and intensity of these ULF emissions. Comparisons are made with experimental observations.
