Fullerenic carbon in carbon black furnaces

The presence of fullerenes and fullerenic carbon in the carbon blacks prepared by industrial furnace reactors was investigated. High resolution electron microscopic examination indicated that fullerenic structures existed in the bulk and on the surface of the carbon black particles. The fullerenic carbons were abundant at very short quenching distances, but their presence was still observable in the carbon black obtained at a longer residence times.
