Effect of polymeric porogens on the properties of poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)

Macroreticular copolymers of styrene with divinylbenzene, poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene), P(St-DVB), were prepared using poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), of various molecular weights, or its mixture with C-10-C-11 aliphatic alcohols as porogens during the suspension polymerization of the monomers. The effect of polymeric porogens on the shape and size of the beads, the inner macroreticular structure (apparent density, pore-volume, specific surface areas, total porosity, mean-pore diameter, cyclohexane uptake, etc.) has been studied. The experimental results showed that it was possible to prepare mcroreticular poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) with large and very large mean pore diameters (100-2600 nm), ca 50.0% total porosity, specific surface less than 10.0 m(2)/g and low apparent densities. The structure of the macroreticular copolymers was also investigated applying Hg-porosimetry and transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
