High-strain-rate superplastic behavior of ingot-processed Al-Mg-Fe alloy

HSRS Al-7Mg-1Fe alloy could be obtained from an ingot by utilizing warm-rolling process only. The strain rate-stress relationship of this alloy turned out to be very similar to that of coarse-grained Al-7Mg binary alloy in terms of n value, creep strength and activation energy for creep. The final microstructure shows the fine subgrain formation within grains of 10≃15 μm. Uniform dispersion of fine Al3Fe was not observed. Tensile elongations of upto 450%, however, could be achieved near at a strain rate of 10-1 s-1 at 465°C and 480°C. Contribution of fine subgrains to superplasticity should be studied further.
