The spatial distribution of stomatal cells in the plant epidermis is generated by stereotyped cell divisions. Recent evidence suggests that a subtilisin-like protease is involved in controlling these cell-division patterns; it may play a role In processing a signal peptide or receptor involved in cell-to-cell communication.
