Degradation profile of films cast from aqueous polyurethane dispersions

Waterborne anionic polyurethanes and poly(urethane-urea)s were synthesized based on poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), 4,4'-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (H12MDI) and dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA). Depending on the chain extender, polyurethanes or poly(urethane-ureas)s were formed. The degradation profiles of cast films obtained from aqueous dispersions were evaluated. TC curves showed a two-step degradation but DTG curves exhibited stages not perceptible in the weight loss curves, which were mainly influenced by chain extender typo, hard segment content and the length of the soft segment. It was verified that the presence of urea groups and longer soft segments promoted an increase in the polyurethanes thermal stability. (C), 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
