Kinetics of isothermal pyrolysis of Jordan oil shales

The isothermal decomposition of kerogen in Jordan shales was studied in a thermal gravimetric type analyzer (TGA) in which the temperature was varied from 648 to 748K at atmospheric pressure. The results were analysed based on a simple mechanism involving first order kinetics. Two consecutive first order reactions could take place during the decomposition of kerogen. Total activation energies of 99.4 and 119.5 kJ mol(-1) for EL-Lajjun and Sultani Shales, respectively, were obtained. These values were in agreement with other published data in the literature.
