Rotational spectra of physisorbed hydrogen

摘要
We have measured differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the j=0-->2 and j=1-->3 rotational transitions of physisorbed para-and ortho-hydrogen. The data reveal that the ratio of the cross-sections, integrated over all relational substates, is close to the gas-phase value. The structure of the j=0-->2 rotational spectrum is compatible with a rotational substate splitting predominantly determined by the orientational dependence of the van der Waals interaction.
