Violascensol 1 and the corresponding 6-ketostearoyl ester 2 were isolated from the fruiting bodies of Lactarius violascens. Their structures were established by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Compounds 1 and 2 are the first examples of protoilludane sesquiterpenes isolated from a Lactarius species. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
