Laparosocopic herniorrhaphy

The approach to inguinal hernia repairs using the laparoscope actually predates the development of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Lack of appropriate instrumentation, early poor results, and a general perception that this was not a cost-effective alternative to a standard open repair have hindered the acceptance of laparoscopic herniorrhaphy. New developments, including properitoneal approaches and the ability to perform these procedures under local or regional anesthesia, are currently being studied. As laparoscopic herniorrhaphy matures as a procedure it is becoming apparent that, for specific indications, it can provide an effective and economical alternative to standard hernia repairs.
