This article concerns custody of young children in foster care. The authors describe an intensive intervention program for maltreated infants and their parents. A multidisciplinary team works to provide integrated and coherent assessments and treatments for maltreated infants and toddlers placed in foster care. The article begins by describing the legal context of the program, and then outlines the process of assessments, involvement with complex systems-especially the legal and child welfare systems-and the interventions provided. Finally, the authors address complex struggles with which clinicians in the program must grapple, including ethical dilemmas and countertransference as experienced within this unique context.
