Analysis of double edge-cracked Iosipescu specimens under biaxial loads

This paper addresses the possibility of using the biaxial Iosipescu test fixture, employing double edge-cracked specimens, for characterizing the intralaminar mixed-mode fracture properties of unidirectional polymer matrix composite materials. The finite element method has been used in conjunction with the modified crack closure integral method for computing the crack tip strain energy release rates under mixed-modes I and II. For cracked specimens loaded under shear and compression, the structurally non-linear contact problem has been combined with the linear fracture analysis in order to evaluate the effects of crack face friction, loading angle, and applied external load on the crack tip energy release rates.
