Pure nickel-coated yttria-stabilized zirconia powders were prepared by an electroless plating technique. The nickel coating structure could be effectively tailored by controlling the gas release rate and could be readily realized by altering the plating temperature. The technique provides a feasible route for the preparation of high quality starting materials for the fabrication of high performance Ni/yttria-stabilized zirconia composites or composite coatings, or as a catalytic component for chemical synthesis.
