A new manganese ortho-arsenate. The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of Ba2Mn(AsO4)(2)

摘要
The new compound Ba2Mn(AsO4)(2) (1) was obtained by heating a mixture of BaCO3, MnO2 and As2O5 in air to 1020 degrees C for 48 h. The manganese ion occupies a distorted octahedral site produced by six oxygen atoms from neighbouring AsO4 groups. Five of the Mn-O contacts are short, Mn-O = 2.11(1)-2.18(1)Angstrom and one is long Mn-O = 2.56(2)Angstrom. The barium ions occupy channels that run parallel to the a-axis of the crystal. Each MnO, octahedron is linked to five nearest neighbours via O-As-O bridging units. Magnetic measurements at room temperature show an effective magnetic moment, mu(eff) = 6.05 B.M., which is consistent with a high-spin Mn2+ ion with five unpaired electrons. The temperature-dependent magnetic measurements show that 1 obeys the modified Curie-Weiss law, C = 4.58 emu K/mol, with a weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the ions as indicated by the Weiss constant, theta(p) = -11 K.
