Point of care diagnostics and networks

Point of care testing (POCT) is a new paradigm in critical care diagnostics. In this model, laboratory tests are performed with user-friendly devices that are located within the vicinity of the ICU bedside. The near future will see improvements in current POCT technology that will focus on the miniaturization of POCT devices as well as incorporation of advances in POCT device function, automation, testing profiles, connectivity, and mechanisms of quality control. Enhancements in the management of POCT data may include advances in data management system software to address the unique needs of POCT devices, users, and regulations. Additionally, POCT specific data management modules may be integrated directly into the laboratory/hospital information system. Long-range technological goals will emphasize the application of innovative techniques of sample procurement, and mini-chip and spectroscopic analyses that will be the foundation for new generations of POCT analyzers and monitors. A close collaborative effort between the central laboratory and POCT users is required for a successful critical care POCT program.
