Specific heats for LaCu2O4 and NdCu2O4, with two inequivalent Cu sites [Cu2+ (S = 1/2, magnetic) and Cu3+ (S = 1, nonmagnetic)], were measured in fields to 7 T. The field-dependent ordering of the Cu2+ had an associated field-independent entropy of 0.29R In 2 instead of the expected R in 2. NdCu2O4 had an additional specific-heat anomaly for Nd3+ and gamma(H)T terms nearly two orders of magnitude greater than those for LaCu2O4. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
