Redistribution of Cr3+ defect centres in LiNbO3 crystals:: the MgO effect

摘要
A broad emission band centred at 1000 nm is reported in codoped LiNbO3:Cr:MgO crystals. The intensity of this emission band increases with increasing MgO concentration at dopant levels higher than 4%. This emission band is attributed to Cr3+ ions substituting into Nb5+ sites. For MgO concentration levels above 4% a transfer of Cr3+ ions located in Li+ sites to Nb5+ sites is observed. This redistribution of the Cr3+ ions is discussed in terms of the occupation of Li+ vacancies and antisites by Mg2+ ions. Time resolved excitation spectra and fluorescence lifetime decays of the two kind of Cr3+ ions are reported. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
