Laser-induced sign reversal of the nonlinear refractive index of Ag nanoclusters in soda-lime glass

摘要
Intense visible laser light is observed to reverse the sign of the nonlinear refractive index of silver-nanocluster-doped glass. The nanoclusters were produced by sequential ion exchange and implantation. During Z-scan measurements with a 6-ps laser, the composite glass was modified, visibly altering the transmission of a region of the sample and irreversibly changing its nonlinear optical response. The mechanism of this change appears to be a photochemical reaction which produces a silver-oxide layer on the surface of the nanoclusters.
