Poly(ethylene oxide) adsorption onto chemically etched silicates by Brewster angle reflectivity

摘要
A new approach to near-Brewster optical reflectivity measurements is described, implementing internal reflection optics and scanning angle capabilities. The method is then employed to characterize chemically etched layers on soda-lime glass, and study poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) adsorption from aqueous solution on the silica surface of soda-lime glass. Adsorption isotherms for several narrow molecular weight PEO samples demonstrate that the plateau of the isotherm extends to dilute concentrations, at least as low as 0.01 ppm. Adsorption kinetic measurements revealed transport-limited behavior and facilitated a determination of the free solution diffusion coefficient of PEG. Diffusivity results were in excellent agreement with the literature. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
