Orthopedic management of septic arthritis

Orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, and infectious disease specialists all face the often serious complications associated with septic arthritis. The methods of preferred management differ among these groups of specialists, but the goal is the same: eradication of bacteria and preservation of joint architecture and function. During the past decade, orthopedic literature has concentrated on increasing the accuracy of diagnosis, efficacy of antibiotics, and the understanding of the interaction of biofilms on implanted materials. Prompt, thorough debridement has remained a basic tenet of the orthopedic management of septic arthritis. Recent literature continues to support this premise, especially in chronic infection or when prosthetic materials are involved.
