The title of this talk has been taken from one of Gordon Smyth's papers published in 1985 entitled 'Results of middle ear reconstruction. Do patients and surgeons agree?"(1) and of course there are two sub-questions 'Do patients agree?' and 'Do surgeons agree?'. The work presented here has two components and has been carried out with colleagues at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Naming them in the acknowledgements emphasises that this is a multi-disciplinary team of quality individuals with various backgrounds working in a financially supported environment. It is only by having such associations that quality research can be produced.
