Three steps to a better implementation of the new Batch Control Standard S88. The authors present an outline for implementing S88 based on their experience re-engineering a batch-intensive silicone manufacturing facility. The three outlined steps include: Laying an educational, organizational and technical foundation (Section 2); creating and documenting the plan (Section 3); and learning from implementation (Section 4). Section 2 focuses on project scope and business drivers, establishing a philosophy of automation, the use of standards, and creation of a skill-based organization. Section 3 focuses on the interrelationship of the "Three Models" of S88 (procedural, physical, and process). Section 4 includes observations from implementation. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
