Thermodynamic properties and crystallization kinetics of highly undercooled liquid Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be alloys

Bulk metallic glasses can be produced from the highly undercooled liquid state by slow cooling of alloy sample sizes of several cm(3). The effective control of potent heterogeneous nucleation sites has recently led to the development of bulk metallic glasses with a complex multicomponent chemistry and advanced engineering properties. One of the alloys most prone to crystallization corresponds to (Zr41Ti13)(Cu13Ni10)Be-23. The specific hear as well as thermal expansion coefficients and viscosity have been measured for the glass, the undercooled liquid and several crystalline phase mixtures. The results suggest that the measured glass transition temperature extrapolated to zero heating rate indeed corresponds to the isentropic (Kauzmann) temperature. The volume change during crystallization amounts to 1.4% indicating that the isochoric temperature must lie below the isentropic temperature in contrast to theoretical predictions to describe the glass transition.
