摘要
Over the last 50 years, continuous progress in solid-state electronics has pushed vacuum electron devices to a narrow range of applications. Solid-state semiconductor devices have become pervasive because they perform exceptionally well for most electronic applications. There are situations though, especially at high voltages and high current densities, where ballistic transport of electrons is preferred. The emerging technology of field-emission vacuum microelectronics that ranges from flat-panel displays to electron beam devices is discussed.
