Cracking in melt-processed RE-Ba-Cu-O superconductors

Microcracking is an important phenomenon in melt-processed RE-Ba-Cu-O superconductors. The conditions leading to a-b microcracking are the objective of this paper. The microstresses, introduced to the YBa2Cu3O7 (123) matrix by different thermal expansions and different elastic constants of 211 (422) and 123 phases, are calculated and illustrated by the observed microcrack pattern around 211 (422) particles. The critical 211 particle size for a-b microcracking is estimated using a simplified model.
