Following the discovery of the aquaporin-1 water channel in 1991, molecular techniques have been developed to examine the roles of renal aquaporins-1, -2, -3, and -4 in disorders of water balance. This article reviews current knowledge regarding aquaporin function and dysfunction in water-losling and water-retaining states. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
