Electrochemical behaviour of the Cu(110)vertical bar water interface

The pzc of the Cu(110)\water interface in acidic medium was determined by means of chronocoulometric and electrochemical impedance measurements. The value of -0.93 +/- 0.01 V (SCE) was supported by the test of the Gouy-Chapman theory carried out on the basis of Parsons-Zobel and of E vs. phi(d) plots. This pzc value fits in the normal sequence of the Literature values for the other low-index faces of copper as obtained from acidic solutions, which are constantly more negative than those obtained from neutral solutions. Adsorption measurements of aliphatic as well as aromatic compounds on the Cu(111) and Cu(110) faces and their comparison with those on the corresponding faces of silver provided only qualitative evidence for a higher hydrophilicity of copper with respect to silver, and of the open face (110) with respect to the compact face (111).
