Volume size factor and lattice parameter in cubic intermetallics with the B2 structure

Values of volume size factor of solid solutions have been used to predict lattice parameters in binary B2 (CsCl prototype) intermetallics. In order to do so one of the two elements has to be identified as solvent. A simple equation containing volume of solvent and volume size factor of solute has been derived and is used to calculate the lattice parameter of different B2 intermetallics. Good prediction is obtained if a transition element is identified as the solvent, the solute can be a transition or a non-transition metal. Equations derived for ternary systems, and predictions obtained using them indicate that the concept of volume size factor can also be extended to ternary systems. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Limited.
