A method to design block-type dendrimers having a well-defined structure was performed using divergent/convergent joint approach. The method was performed on a carbohydrate-based AB-type dendrimer to create a Sugar Ball derivative having a surface-block structure. The molecular recognition potential of the dendrimers studied by ultraviolet (UV)/vis spectrophotometer showed apparent recognition ability toward the protein receptor suggesting that the polymers with hemispherical blocks have a capability as cell-recognizable biomedical materials.
