摘要
This article emphasizes the rapidly evolving role of fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) imaging in the assessment of neoplastic diseases, infectious and inflammatory processes, and cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders. This article also discusses the development of new radiotracers that should further enhance and expand the role of PET imaging in the detection of hypoxia, cell proliferation, and movement disorders. The article briefly considers the potential role of other functional imaging techniques such as nuclear MR spectroscopy and optical imaging in assessing metabolism and function in certain settings. Finally, it addresses the necessity of precise structural/functional correlation in many settings and forecasts future trends for this major imaging modality.
