DILATATION ACCORDING TO DEISTING FOR PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA Results of Follow Up Five to Ten Years after Operation (Reprinted from Scandinvian Journal of Urology and Nephrology, vol 1, pgs 55-62, 1967)

On follow up of 150 patients with prostatic hyperplasia five to ten years after operation according to Deisting, 50 had succumbed and 9 failed to attend for examination. Thirty-eight patients had undergone reoperation; this consisted in repeated dilatation in 4 cases, prostatectomy in 26, and some other procedure in 8 cases. The remaining 53 patients were followed up. In 40 of these patients the residual urine amounted to only 0 to 50 ml, and in 30 the urine was free of bacteria. Thirty-four of 45 patients were fully continent, while 11 had some terminal drip or marked urgency. True incontinence was not present in any instance. Twenty-four passed urine only once or not at all at night. The results may, then, be said to be fairly good and the operative method is recommended under certain conditions.
