Ivermectin

Ivermectin is the most important systemic antiparasitic medication for dermatologic indications that has manifested in recent decades. Ivermectin, currently available only in a 3 mg. tablet, is indicated for therapy of strongyloidosis and onchocerciasis, but it is also of proven benefit in scabies infestation and pediculosis. Additional applications are the subject of anecdotal reports. Dermatologists should familiarize themselves with the effects and clinical pharmacology of this first agent in a class of potent antiparasitic agents (as a group called "avermectins"). Future compounds in this class might demonstrate even greater efficacy.
