Over recent years the number of calls made to the emergency services has significantly increased. The majority of this increase is derived from mobile calls and in many countries the proportion of mobile-originated calls is over 50%. Despatching emergency services is expedited if the location of the caller can be swiftly obtained. This involves the emergency call-handling centres working closely with telecommunications operators. The initiatives that have driven the provision of caller location are described as well as the associated standards. An overview of the technical requirements for mobile location is also given.
