Environmentally assisted dynamic embrittlement in a long range ordered Ni-Mo-Cr alloy

A recently developed Ni-25%Mo-8%Cr (wt.%) alloy, known under its commercial name HAYNES 242 Alloy, exhibits excellent high-temperature strength and ductility, low thermal expansion characteristics, good oxidation resistance and excellent fabricability. HAYNES' mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, especially in the alloy subjected to long-term exposures at the typical service temperature of 650 °C, have not yet been investigated in a systematic way. To fill this gap and address crucial aspects related to the technological viability of the alloy, the effects of the long-term exposure at 650 °C on room and elevated temperature mechanical properties were studied, emphasizing the embrittlement observed in the alloy under certain conditions.
